How to: Hamachi

This tutorial is for
Name:
LogMeIn Hamachi VPN Client
Version:
2.1.0.362

Hamachi is a little piece of software that creates a virtual private network (VPN) over the internet. It allows its users to connect directly with each other and share files as if they were in the same house and connected to the same internet hub or router. This means that users can play games with each other as if on the same local network. A VPN created in Hamachi is called a tunnel. Once connected to the same network tunnel, users will be able to see each other in the LAN list of any game, even if sitting on opposite sides of the world.

The website offers two installation options: Unmanaged, and Managed.
Each option downloads the same software, but the Managed option first guides you through the process to register an account online. This account is intended to help you switch between and manage larger and more complicated networks.

This is not really useful for a smaller home network or personal use, so I will not cover it here.

Installation

  1. Go to https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/download.aspx
  2. Download the "Unmanaged" option (which is also currently the only option whose button says "Download Now")
  3. Once downloaded, run the installation program.
  4. The default directory is fine, so all you have to do during the installation is press "Next" and "Install"

The software

Inital setup

When Hamachi first runs, it will guide you through the process of naming your computer and setting up a network.

  1. Press the OnOff-button.
  2. Choose a name for your computer.
  3. Network -> Join an existing network
  4. Type in the network ID and password.

Networks

New networks are added to the list, and connected to when the On/Off-button is pressed. If you want to disconnect from a single network, right-click on its name and select "Go offline" from the context-menu.

How to setup a new network

  1. On the menu, choose Network -> Create a network
  2. Type in a name for the network.
  3. And then a password for it.
